Working at AAU: #6 Income tax (ændres til "Tax card")

Everyone working and living in Denmark must pay taxes. The most common tax for employees is the labour market contribution (8 % of your salary) and your personal income tax (normally around 40 % of your remaining income after paying the labour market contribution).

It is very difficult to give advice on taxes as your final assessment by the Danish tax authorities are influenced by a great number of factors. Do you own property in Denmark or in another country, do you pay interest on any mortgages, do you bring a spouse and is he/she working, do you live close to your workplace etc.

When you arrive in Denmark, it is important that you contact the tax authorities to get the correct assessment.

If your personal or work conditions change at any point, it is always a good idea to contact the tax authorities in order to find out if these changes influences your tax assessment.

You can read more about the Danish tax system in the booklet below and you can also find out more at the homepage of WorkinDenmark.

If you want to find out more about the special tax scheme for foreign researchers, please visit the homepage of the tax authorities.

At Aalborg University it is the Salary Office who is responsible for the special tax scheme for researchers. Please contact them if you have further questions.

Registration with the tax authorities

It is important that you register with the Danish tax authorities when you move to Denmark. You can do so by going to the International Citizen Service. If you fail to register and the authorities therefore cannot assess your personal tax rate, the university by law must deduct a higher amount of taxes each month.

If you do not take up living in Denmark, your department secretary will apply for a tax assessment with the tax authorities.
